Wimbledon 2014: Champions

via Wikipedia
Wow, what a match!  Between Netherlands/Costa Rica and Djokovic/Federer, I spent quite a lot of the weekend on the edge of my seat.  Novak Djokovic (Serbia) won his second Wimbledon, his seventh Major overall.  He also regained the #1 world ranking and has to be considered the early favorite for the US Open.

For me, the only mystery with Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) is why it took her so long to win her second Wimbledon or even her second Major tournament.  When she first won three years ago, she seemed to have both the game and the swagger to not only win more Slams, but perhaps dominate women's tennis for many years.  She's 24 now, plenty of time to claim a few more big prizes before she's done.

  1. Only watch the last half and I though of you.
    My loyalties changes several times.
Still don't know who I wanted to win. One older who would have been nice to see win one more time or the runner up a few times ?

    cheers, parsnip

    1. I'll always love Federer. He could never be a lovable underdog having won so much but his game and manner are both so beautiful. And man, does that dog have fight!

Djokovic deserved to win. With marriage and fatherhood looming, he's in for quite a summer.

  2. Petra put on a masterclass tennis match - one interview I heard was that she found it difficult to deal with the fame the first time around. She is now older and more mature - her dad was in tears, so lovely to see. The men, I couldn't pick a favourite, both are fantastic players and great sportsmen with a lot of respect for each other and the game. Now what am I going to do all day?

    1. Boy, did she ever! The women's final was essentially ceremonial.

I have the same feeling about what to do now. Thank goodness there are still four more World Cup matches. And of course, there's that huge stack of books to read...

  3. Petra rocked it. I think they'll be watching re-caps for years and years. The Dad factor was the best part (I'm sure many would disagree).

The guys - not so invested in the outcome. Good match, though!

    All around - smiles.

    Thanks, Squidimaniac!

    1. She has the capacity to dominate. It'll be interesting to see what comes next for Petra.

  4. I appreciate your updates. I don't follow tennis the way I used to, back when it was Jimmy Connors and Chris Everett and they were dating. I told Willy Dunne Wooters that I watched tennis for years and knew all the important players. He was very surprised.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Public interest in the US has certainly dropped off in recent years. Nearly all of the top players are European these days - definitely cuts into the interest of many here in the States.
