Squid Mixes: Alaska

An Alaska combines Chartreuse, gin and orange bitters with a lemon twist.  Some recipes call for yellow, others green.  My recipe from The New York Bartender's Guide chose green.  The drink's etymology is unknown, as is its connection with USA's 49th state.

This one's good.  I think it helped that I used a lighter gin, Fleischmann's, than I did with the Rocky Green Dragon.  The orange bitters also brought the much needed citrus notes the other lacked.

    1. I'm guessing you would prefer the lighter gins, too. Fleischmann's is good. Burnett's is our current favorite. The lowest shelf is probably your best bet.

  2. Never been a gin drinker and it's not the alcohol I'd link to our 49th State. I can't see Robert Service and friends drinking gin during the Yukon Days--only rot-gut whiskey!

    1. Yes, that sounds right. Generally speaking, whiskey seems like more of a frontier drink than other liquors. Rum and gin are for the seafarers.
