Bitters of the Month: Grapefruit
Fee Brothers, based in Rochester, New York, produces a wide range of bitters. I picked up grapefruit for this month. It smells wonderful and it really does taste like grapefruit, including a touch of peel. My wife perceived an aftertaste - not a bad thing but it was there. To me, a gin and grapefruit bitters basically tastes like an alcoholic Fresca without the bubbles.

I didn't know you could get fruity bitters. There was some grapefruit beer in the store the other day. I passed on it.

I should probably do a series on beer someday. I am not short on opinions...
DeleteFruity beers are tricky. Some work really nicely. Some are awful. The Belgians do it right and there's an outstanding brand in Quebec, too: Unibroue. Much depends on when the fruit flavor is added, before or after brewing. And, of course, sometimes the fruitiness emerges from the hops themselves. Magic Hat's #9 is very apricoty, especially on tap, and I don't think there's actually any fruit in it at all.
All of that said, I probably would also have taken a pass on the product you mentioned.
This sounds so good to me. I didn't know about this type of bitters.
ReplyDeleteI knew it existed but had never tried it before. I'm finding it quite useful.
DeleteI haven't tried anything like that before, sounds nice!
ReplyDeleteAre you a cocktail drinker, Natalia?
DeleteWe're doing liqueurs, right now. My wife has not found any of the bitters we've tried particularly appealing, though we do have some interesting ones.
ReplyDeleteAny good liqueurs? I'm a big fan of amaretto.
DeleteSo far, all of them!
DeleteThe most interesting is the St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram.
Cool.
DeleteNever heard of fruit Bitters. This sounds nice.
ReplyDeleteWe're enjoying it.
