Squid Mixes: Whiskey Sour

Whiskey sours were very popular in Japan when I was there in the mid-'90s.  One could order them in a wide variety of fruity flavors and florescent colors.  My concoction, derived from The New York Bartender's Guide recipe, was not so dazzling visually but it was certainly sour!  The blended whiskey and lemon juice are in 2:1 ratio with only a teaspoon of sugar syrup.  Mind you, I like sour so I was not unhappy.  Wife liked it, too.

Sours have been around a long time, the first known mention in a Waukesha, Wisconsin newspaper in 1870.  Add egg white (yuck!) and it's a Boston Sour.  Float red wine over the top and it's a New York Sour.

  1. Never had one but it sounds good! Does the egg white get frothed before adding it for a Boston sour?

    1. The egg gets shaken with everything else. Apparently, it adds fizz and thickness.

  3. The variations sound gross! Whiskey sours (simple versions) sound like good cold remedies, most medicinal.

  4. I only know the original Whiskey Sour which is what you wrote here. What Japan did to the Whiskey Sour is what we have done to the Martini...if you change the taste etc... it is not a whiskey sour or a martini

  6. Sounds tasty! I feel like I used to drink these back in college- but maybe I am confusing this drink with another drink. Going to think about it. :)

  9. Since Whiskey and Bourbon are so similar, I think I'd give this a try, but I'm not interested in the egg-white either.
