Mock Squid Soup: October Blog List

MOCK! and The Armchair Squid are proud to present Mock Squid Soup: A Film Society.  Each month, on the second Friday, we shall host a bloghop devoted to a particular movie.  We invite others to watch the same film and post their own reviews.

Our society shall convene next on October 10th with Unbreakable.

We hope that you, too, will watch the movie and join in our discussion.  Please sign on to the list below:

  1. Been years since I watched that one. I remember it was good but not great.

    1. I've never seen it. Mock's choice this month. I truly love Sixth Sense, yet somehow I've never gotten around to seeing any of Shyamalan's other films.

    2. You don't really want to watch any of his other works; it's just downhill from Sixth Sense, eventually going over the edge of a cliff and a hard fall after.
Which is not to say that Unbreakable isn't good; it is, but it's nothing even close to Sixth, and it's his 2nd best movie.

    3. Yes, this is what I've heard. I'm still curious about it.

  2. Why, why would you subject people to Syamalan? His recent efforts have been so terribly unwatchable that they retroactively negate even mediocre past efforts.

    1. Consider this, my fine pickled friend: negative film reviews can be fun, too, both to write and to read.

That said, I shan't pass judgment upon a movie I have not seen.

  3. I looove this movie. Fortunately you keep picking good movies!

  4. I saw that SO long ago! Seems like a lifetime.

    1. For me, it was in a sense. In 2000, my wife and I weren't even married yet, let alone thinking seriously about parenthood.

  5. Interesting comment thread. I do want to participate in your film society but am waiting for a movie I really want to watch. (I should have joined up during Stand By Me!) I'll confess to looking forward to the big reveal each month.

    1. Suze, what would be a genre, actor/actress or director that might be attractive to you?

    2. For instance, how do you feel about Japanese science fiction?

    3. I beg to *dif.*

      This is not snarking, Squidman.

And lemme chew on this a bit and get back to you, Mock. Thanks for asking!

    4. Well, okay... But the "manly" one was a bit...

      I expect no less.

      ;^)

    5. I'm sorry! It was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw your latest choice! :D You should congratulate me on my unfiltered commenting.

Okay, so I actually gave my movie suggestion quite a bit of thought on and off yesterday--I even scanned the spines of my DVD collection and I've come up with something for January. It's winter-themed, with the skiing and the New Year and what have you, so it's perfect.

      You guys ready?

      BETTER OFF DEAD!

      (And tell Nan. :))

    6. Congratulations, Suze, on your unfiltered commenting.

Your suggestion is intriguing. You realize, of course, that if we do choose your movie, you're obligated to join us for the month. Bailing in that situation would not be viewed favorably.

    7. I do. :)

Now, would this mean we post the second Friday of Jan? At this point, I can see no scheduling conflicts.

And have I bailed that much on the CC that my reputation precedes me ?? I thought I'd only done it twice ...

    8. It's Mock's pick for January but he seems open to suggestions and his wife loves your movie so I'd say the odds are pretty good. We do, indeed, aim for the second Friday of the month.

I understand if you can't make CC work in a given month. We won't let anyone else use your coffee mug. I'm just saying it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a certain level of commitment if we pick your movie.

  6. I do kind of want to participate, but I know I'll not have time to find, watch, & review it in time. In your rating system, I'd give Sixth Sense a 4.2 and Unbreakable a 3.6 or thereabouts. M Night filmed this within walking distance of my old Philly stomping grounds... maybe a few more tenths of a point when I'm feeling nostalgic. :-)

(But, oh, they should really track down and burn every copy of his Last Airbender. Negative a zillion...)

    1. It's really too bad about the Last Airbender, too, since the cartoon series is so good. My daughter loves it.
