Squid Mixes: Bacardi Special

The drink is very pink.  Two teaspoons of grenadine will do that.

A Bacardi Special combines white rum (Bacardi, of course), gin, fresh lime juice, grenadine and a lemon or lime garnish.  I chose lime.  I got my recipe from How's Your Drink? by Eric Felten.  The flavor balance was really nice.  The rum, lime and grenadine each have a voice.  I do wonder if one could make do without the gin - a taste test for sometime.

  1. On my screen it looks like red, like a Bloody Mary, one of the few mixed drinks I abide in.

    1. I love bloody marys! Can hardly believe I haven't gotten around to that one in this series yet. Maybe this summer, with fresh tomato juice. Mmm...

  3. You need to try Mount Gay Black Barrel rum. Way better than Bacardi.
And I need to try this drink.

    1. A thorough exploration of rums is definitely in order at some point.

    1. You're probably right, though it's the only ingredient that doesn't present strongly in this particularly concoction. Gin is funny stuff. Even without much presence of its own, it binds other flavors together more effectively than vodka does. In a cocktail, vodka can feel like alcohol for alcohol's sake. Gin works a more subtle game.

    1. I generally agree though in my experience it's important not to let lime overpower. You want other flavors to be able to play, too.

  6. I think Jack Sparrow and his crew loved Bacardi rum. It must have been a hit given its history.
