Issues #26-30 of Yummy Fur were eventually collected in graphic novel form under the title I Never Liked You. The story is autobiographical, chronicling Brown's teenage experiences in suburban Montreal. There's nothing particularly scandalous here as his parents were quite strict, forbidding him ever to swear - even away from the house (thus the story's original F-bomb title). There is a bit of nudity so the book does fall short of child friendly.
Starting with what is essentially the second chapter of the story, I missed out on some of the details regarding individual characters. Gordon is his brother but they play with three other kids - Connie, Carrie and Grant - who are...neighbors? I'll need to go back to the beginning to clear all of this up. There is clearly a mutual love interest between Chester and Carrie but one wonders how far his shyness will allow that to develop.
So, that's four Chester Brown titles for me so far. He's batting .500, 2 for 4, with me.

My scavenger hunt was pretty straight-forward: find comic
books off the rack with titles starting from A-Z. Go check out the rest
of the participants in this year's A-Z challenge. The official site is
here.
Remind me of the other three CB titles?
ReplyDeleteSo far, with one day to go, my favorite of your profiles has been Louis Riel.
Ed the Happy Clown, Louis Riel and Underwater. Louis Riel may be my favorite of the bunch, too. I just finished the full book this past weekend. It's excellent. I'll have a reflection when we resume normal programming on Wednesday.
DeleteThat'll be nice.
DeleteRegular programming? Louis Riel reflection? Both? I'm going to go with both. A-Z's been fun but it's time to move on.
DeleteThe Riel reflection. I really enjoyed reading everyone else's posts during the A-Z and feel the tiniest regret at seeing it draw to a close. I am, however, interested in the projected evolution of the Squid that you mentioned here and there.
DeleteYou did a great job with the Challenge. Kudos. :)
Thanks, Suze. I've enjoyed it, too.
DeleteI remember not liking Yummy Fur, something which backed up by the fact that I don't own any issues (that I know of).
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting to like it but was pleasantly surprised.
DeleteI avoided this one, too, mainly because of a review in the Comics Journal that must have emphasized it's underground style & sensibility. The panels they reproduced in their review made it seem more unnerving than, oh I don't know, the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, or (more recently) Ringu, or something. In comparison, the actual coming-of-age plot is so... normal sounding! :-)
ReplyDeleteI have the full book on the to-read stack and should get to it fairly soon. I'll be interested to see if I still like it beyond this little snippet.
DeleteFur is not yummy. Anyone who says differently probably has it covering their bodies.
ReplyDeleteI tried to find the origin of the name but couldn't. Knowing Brown, I feel I might be better off not knowing. However, there was a Scottish indie-rock band who named themselves after the comics.
