Squid Mixes: Castor's Gold

A Castor's Gold combines light rum, honey syrup, lime juice and horseradish.  I got the recipe from The One-Bottle Cocktail by Maggie Hoffman who in turn credits Adam James Sarkis of Phoenix Cocktail Club in Milwaukee.  The drink is named for Nicholas Cage's character in Face/Off.

This was my first experience with double straining, I assume to keep the little bits of horseradish out of the drink.  I will confess that I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to horseradish, even going pretty light on the wasabi with my sashimi.  Here, I have to admit that it made for a rather exciting drink.  Mind you, the scant quarter-teaspoon goes a long way.

  1. Oh My Goodness this sounds so good !
I was raised Polish and eating dishes with horseradish as a condiment was common. Because of my time in Japan and Japaneses family I love wasabi !
Even though I do not drink, I would try this drink.

  2. Dear Squid. I have gone more than "pretty light on the wasabi with my sashimi." --even if I didn't know what it is, it just sounds like it would hurt.

    1. It can definitely be painful if you're not ready for it - or even if you are! I prefer a pepper heat myself.

  3. huh... Horseradish.
I may have to get that recipe from you and try this one soon. Soon being not before next week, because I'm heading out of town tomorrow.

I mixed up a new drink from my 'Be Your Own Bartender' book this past weekend. It's called Oaxaqueno and it has corn milk! It was very unusual and quite good.

  4. Again, anything with lime juice is good, except with horseradish?

  6. This sounds like something I'd try. I love horseradish! Make it a double! That said, the name seems to be a play on Castor Oil, which seems to be a marketing nightmare :)

    1. From what I understand, the name comes from the movie Face/Off, which I have never seen. Castor is a character's name. I have no idea what gold has to do with any of it.

I didn't think of the Castor Oil confusion. I can see how that might be a turn off.
