30 Songs in 30 Days, Day 16: A Song That You Used to Love but Now Hate

Song: "If I Had $1000000"
Writers: Steven Page and Ed Robertson
Band: Barenaked Ladies
Album: Gordon

My Wife ruined this song for me. In fact, she ruined the whole band for me. I'd like to think that I'm not easily swayed in my opinions - my musical opinions especially - but sometimes it happens. Someone I respect says something negative about a band I like and suddenly I start to listen to them more critically.

Barenaked Ladies was no end of hip on the college scene in the early '90s and this song in particular was huge. But My Wife mentioned one day that she found the band annoying and it seemed only a matter of time before they began to annoy me, too. I soon realized that they're really just a cheap knock off of They Might Be Giants. She ruined Red Hot Chili Peppers for me, too.

I cannot claim to be completely innocent in such matters. I know, for instance, that my sister really liked Steely Dan until I mentioned that Donald Fagen's voice tends to grate on me. The funny part is that while her interest waned, my appreciation of the band has grown over the years.

    1. Well...

BNL are certainly the more commercially successful version but I'll take classic TMBG anytime.

  3. Listen to all of the impeccably-orchestrated instrumentation, especially starting at 2:07 for about thirty seconds, along with the solid vocals in this Cockburn cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_oOc3Zj0KU .

Granted, it's a cover and the original is just an amazing song, but I think they did it justice. Far surpasses any purple toupee.

Plus, aren't they playing broomball at one point in the vid? :)

    1. Sorry, the ship has sailed for me on this one. I appreciate your efforts, though.

  4. This is really getting eerie. D and I were discussing this song yesterday, as well...it came on the radio station we really like, our own 'anything goes' station. D hates this band, (and the RHCP too), and I was just wondering how long he'd let this song play, because it is VERY long...I think it was a good 5 minutes before he figured it out and was like, what?! Let's turn this !@#$% off! LOL
