Squid Mixes: Stinger

I got my stinger recipe from my good friend and fellow blogger, Nancy Mock.  Here's the article she wrote on the drink for Taste of Home.  It's a great piece, including a history of the drink and several pop culture references.


The cocktail combines brandy and white creme de menthe.  The result is quite minty, indeed.  Had me pondering thin mint cocktail possibilities.  There are such recipes online, of course, though I'd want to experiment on my own, probably using creme de cacao for the chocolate.  I don't know if we'll be having stingers again but it's always fun to play around with new flavor ideas.

Pale in color

Failla Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2017

Darker, more gold in color
Delicate aroma - ripe pear

Stein Weihwasser Riesling Feinherb 2018 
Light in color, though more gold than the Muscadet
Pineapple nose
Sweeter
My rating: 83

All three wines were more acidic than I would generally go for.  Our instructor really likes high acid wines.  Not so sure I do.  It was less of a problem, though, with the Riesling.  As she pointed out herself, the sweetness and the acid set each other off nicely.

    Mint is a thing for me.

    1. Be sure to get the white creme de menthe, not the green. According to Nan, the green gives you a sludgy, unpleasant color in combo with the brandy.

  4. Thanks for trying this drink and for including a link to my article! I didn’t expect to like the Stinger as much as I do. I’ve been on an Old Fashioned kick lately, but after reading this I say: “Stingers - and keep them coming!”

    1. Old-Fashioned... I don't make them because they use sugar cubes and my wife doesn't like having those in the house - too tempting for snacking. I did find an older recipe that doesn't use cubes, though.

      They have a lot of the same ingredients as a Manhattan so I do like them. You better like your whiskey, though! They can be strong.
