Squid Mixes: Old Aztec Cocktail

An Old Aztec Cocktail combines rye, sugar, water, orange peel, orange bitters and chocolate bitters.  It is essentially an old fashioned recipe and prepared in the glass as such.  I got my recipe from Abby at No Fail Recipe.  I forgot to take a photo of mine so the one above is from the site.  Apparently Abby uses more ice than my two cubes and she garnishes with a cherry which I did not - nice idea, though.

I tried this drink mostly as a test of the Aztec Chocolate bitters.  Frankly, there isn't much in the way of chocolate flavor, though the aroma certainly bloomed nicely as soon as it hit the glass.  My wife felt the drink does have a sort of chocolate chewiness - not sure what she means but she's the supertaster so I'll trust her.  Otherwise, it's a perfectly nice drink.

    1. It was nice. I find old fashioned preparation fussy compared to my beloved Manhattan which is otherwise comparable. Swapping out the Angostura bitters for the chocolate is an interesting variation there.

  2. Probably not one I'm interested in experimenting with.
This week has been working with passion fruit syrup, which I haven't made a decision about. I need to get some gin before I can form a full opinion, since more than half of my recipes call for gin rather than rum.

    1. A discovery I have made about gin recently: go for the cheap stuff if you'd prefer not to have too strong of a gin flavor. Less is more. The lower shelf is your friend.

  3. Orange and chocolate are a winning combo for me.
This year I've put dark chocolate in my sloe liquor, looking forward to trying that. And the 365, which gets weirder by the day!

    1. Okay, I'll admit it. I don't know what you mean by the 365! Please share.

    2. It's the jar of spirit to which we add something locally foraged or homegrown every day of the year, hence we call it the 365. It is a scary looking jar!

    1. They certainly are! I'm not sure this is the best drink to enjoy that combo, though.
