Squid Mixes: Ménage à Quatre

Nope, sorry.  I have not converted to a kinky sex blog.  A Ménage à Quatre truly is a cocktail.  It combines gin, lemon juice, triple sec and Lillet blanc in equal portions.  I got my recipe from Drinking French by David Lebovitz.  The result is quite citrusy, both lemon and orange.

Lillet is new for me.  It is an aromatised wine from Bordeaux.  The aromas come mostly from orange peel: sweet oranges from Spain and Morocco and bitter oranges from Haiti.  So between the triple sec and the Lillet, there's enough orange to compete with the lemon juice.

  1. Interesting, but I don't see us going into gin anytime soon.
I have one more invented cocktail to do but haven't had a chance to set up the post for it yet.

    1. I've probably said this before...

I'm generally iffy on gin by itself but it's highly effective as a mixer. It has a magical power to draw flavors together, different from vodka's tendency to push them apart. Gin binds. Vodka dilutes.

    2. As a result, most gin-based drinks don't really taste ginny at all.

Gin is well worth further exploration. I think I have one or two others to exam first but gin will get its due at some point.
